Who is This For
Most riders own more protection than they wear. The jacket stays at home when it's 90 degrees Fahrenheit. The armored pants get skipped for a "quick" errand. - Made from Dyneema reinforced mesh fabric approximately 15X stronger than steel by weight for abrasion resistance
- Available in men's and women's cuts with inclusive sizing across the range
The Dyneema content is woven into a breathable mesh structure rather than solid protective panels which allows for both CE AAA certification and lighter weight. The mesh architecture preserves protection while allowing meaningful airflow. Flat-lock seams prevent pressure points and chafing and CE Level 2 armor inserts site in the pockets at the impact zones that are removable for washing and replaceable when they age. Four-way stretch in key zones allows the fabric to move with the body on the bike without restriction. Beware: It does have a faint, textured feel that some riders notice immediately on the first wear, but testers say this disappears within the first two wears and was not reported as an issue once break in was completed.
On the Bike Performance
Hot Weather:
The mesh construction delivers meaningful airflow at speed. At low speed or stationery, it's warmer than a plain shirt but a good tradeoff for the CE AAA protection. Once moving, the ventilation is effective even in high humidity at high temps and much better than anticipated. The is not a summer specific garment set but it holds up better than any comparable protected underlayer according to testers.
Cold Weather:
The Underlayer is genuinely versatile in cooler conditions. Layer over it as temperatures drop and it works as a base layer under a winter jacket adding CE protection without bulk or decreased range of motion. The armor inserts stay flexible even at low temperatures avoiding the rigid, stiff-panel problem that plagues some CE certified garments.
Under a Jersey:
This may be where Elite's case is most compelling. Under a standard Motocross or Enduro jersey, the garment sits completely flat with zero visible bulk. Riders who tested it at the track confirmed it was effectively invisible.
Helmet and Neck Area:
The shirt collar sits snugly at the neck without riding up into a full-face helmet. It pairs cleanly with a neck brace without creating pressure points or interference at the collar line.
Protection Credentials

Note: CE AAA covers abrasion resistance ONLY. For chest and spine protection, riders should supplement with dedicated chest and back protection. These products do not replace dedicated armor systems for Motocross, Enduro and Adventure Rides, however, it provides a foundation to an overall protection system.

Pricing of items range from $265-$1,060:

This is premium territory to be sure. However, if wearing a Bowtek Elite Underlayer means you'll actually ride with CE Level 2 protection rather than wearing a traditional armored jacket only 50% of the time then the math is straightforward.
The CE Level inserts are replaceable making this a long-term buy and not a short-term repeatable buy. That certainly helps with the premium price. Armor degrades over time from UV exposure, compression, and impact which most riders never replace. Knowing the Bowtek Elite Underlayer supports a replaceable approach is certainly favorable in the long-term.
What it Doesn't Do
Any good review includes this section. Understanding limitations ensures you get the most of it.
- Not a roost deflector. For hard Motocross racing, a chest protector is still required as the Dyneema mesh is not impact absorbing at the chest and torso.
- No spine/back CE certification at the highest level requiring a dedicated back protector for serious off-road use.
- The price is a real barrier. This is a true purchase decision - not an impulse buy.
- It is not an insulation layer. This is base layer protection not warmth.
The Verdict
The Bowtek Elite Underlayer is the most compelling argument for everyday protection in the moto market. It solves the gap between protection riders own and protection riders actually wear. CE AAA abrasion rating and CE Level 2 impact armor under any clothing at a weight and profile you forget is there makes this a premium product deserving of price.
It earns a genuine recommendation with one condition; understanding what it is and what it isn't. Pair it with the proper chest and back protection and treat Bowtek Elite Underlayer as the foundation not the all in protection system.
